Almost as quirky as Manitou itself - Rachael and Ryan were quite the pair! The evening started off in Manitou Springs, Colorado - pick any side street and there is your back drop. The evening was a perfect combination of sunlight and cloud cover. While we didn't necessarily intend to stop in at the penny arcade, per se, we could not pass it up once we noticed it. We shot this scene tight at 55mm to remove extra distractions, and used f2.8 to bring the focus right to the subjects. The lighting was all natural, using reflections from the glass windows and the building behind us. We crouched down a little bit to keep Rachael and Ryan proportionally sized and to capture the humorous emotion more straight on. What we loved about them was how well they transitioned from their serious pictures to their more romantic ones, as if both came quite naturally. Later we left the arcade and went to Red Rock Open Space, just a few miles down the road, to get in some of that Colorado look and feel. Red Rock was beautiful, a little windy, but the temp was just perfect. By then they had really warmed up to the camera, and the evening really did become a date.
